Bright red cerise colour, aromatics are layered with savoury earthy spice, lifted potpourri and dense briary allure. The palate is highly spiced and bursts with unctuous blackberry and red currant. The charcuterie oak influence and seamless tannin highlight this wines nervy structural intensity, supported by indefinable persistence and exuberant enjoyment for decades to come.
Block F, planted in 1989, is a small 0.7ha block planted on the higher slopes of the valley side, and has a gentle north facing slope. The soils are black volcanic clay-loams littered with basalt and small rock fragments. This block was fermented with 100% whole bunches including 25% Carbonic Maceration, indigenous yeasts, natural malolactic fermentation following 9 months maturation in 25% new French oak.
Clyde Park Vineyard was established by Gary Farr in the premium Geelong sub-region of Bannockburn when Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were planted on the property. Further plantings since have increased the vineyard size to 35 acres, expanding the original Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blocks with additional clonal material and adding Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. After changing hands a few times since Gary Farr sold the vineyard in 1995 to establish his own eponymous label, the property has been in the safe hands of Terry and Sue Jongebloed for the past 15 years. The site consists of an undulating north easterly slope with various soil types ranging from silt/clay to sandy loam with basalt over a limestone base. The vineyards are managed in sustainably and, whilst not certified, are organically grown most years. The site produces premium fruit from naturally low yielding vines which make balanced wines of great purity, complexity and finesse. Whilst the approach in the vineyard is very much a hands-on one with all pruning, picking and sorting done by hand, a hands-off approach is adopted in the winery to allow the fruit and terroir to shine in every bottle. With some of the oldest vines in the region coupled with an uncompromising approach to winemaking and viticulture, Clyde Park is at the forefront of Geelong producers and has helped firmly establish the area as one of Australia’s premium wine growing districts.
