The gris pick was the stand out fruit for the 2021 season, slow ripening with prominent acid. This wine is a blend of three equal-volume parcels. The first was destemmed and left on skins for four days, the second was destemmed and left on skins for 9 days and the third parcel was whole bunch fermented. After pressing, all wine was sent to old barriques where it finished ferment (with partial malo) and rested on lees for 10 months. It was blended into tank, settled and bottled. It wasn't filtered or fined, only 140 dozen produced.
If you're looking for a bit more something something in your white wine collection, this is a nice option for anyone new to orange wines. And for those who are well acquainted, this has all the hallmarks of skin-contact pinot gris (extra flavour, texture, wildness) without too much weirdness. Try this if you've enjoyed skin contact wines made from gris, sauvignon blanc, arneis or any other aromatic variety.
A deeply orange wine full of spice, skinsy complexity and edgy acidity that showcases the wilder side of pinot gris. It is a little cloudy, with aromas of fig, mandarin and dried aromatic herbs like fennel and cardamon. Despite the deep colour it's quite a light wine, with flavours of nashi skin and blood orange marmalade - with a savoury kick from the stems component.
Clare Burder is the unstoppable force behind Eminence Wines, a grower-producer located in the sub alpine region of Whitlands in north east Victoria. The high altitude (840m) site is one of the coldest vineyards in Australia and features rich, free draining Devonian era loam soils. Planted with pinot gris, pinot noir, pinot blanc, meunier and chardonnay, the site presents an immense challenge viticulturally but produces concentrated fruit with remarkable acidity and varietal purity. The winemaking is simple: all wines are barrel fermented and/or aged, gently handled, not filtered or fined and are typically made without any adjustments or additives except for sulphur. The result is a range of interesting, characterful, gentle wines which capture the essence of Whitlands.
Clare from Eminence recommends pairing this wine, or other orange wines, with foods that can be difficult to pair with wines typically, such as Japanese and Korean flavours particularly. The stem and skin contact of this wine make it a great match for dishes like bibimbap. Other options would be miso-roasted vegetables with salads with tangy dressings. All that aside, its a perfect wine to sip and savour with some washed rind cheese. Delish!
