2018 Spinifex Rostein

Spinifex’s Rostein vineyard is home to two parcels of ancient Riesling, one planted in 1945 and the other in 1956. These parcels produce minuscule yields for Riesling—a paltry 0.8-tonnes per acre is the norm—resulting in wines of atypical concentration and power. 2015 was the first Spinifex harvest from Rostein, yet the wines have been previously been released (discreetly) as single-vineyard Eden Valley.

This is the inaugural release under the Estate label as it’s the first wine to reach the heights for which Pete Schell was aiming. It comes predominantly from the oldest vines (from 1945, surely some of Australia’s oldest Riesling vines!) and was hand-picked in three passes over a week. The wine was then fermented naturally and aged on lees for 11 months in 1,000-litre neutral oak and, was even allowed to go through partial malo. It was then bottled unfiltered after 16 months. In other words: this is anything but your garden variety SA Riesling!

Since the first harvest from the vineyard in 2015, the Riesling they have made has always been notable for its concentration, which they have come to attribute to in part the string of generally low yielding vintages and more importantly to some intrinsic nature of the site. It’s a quality they embrace. Handpicked in three passes over a week, each parcel was treated individually with regards to maceration prior to pressing and fermentation in both oak and stainless steel. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and partial malolactic fermentation were undertaken and the wine left on lees for 10 months prior to racking. Bottled at 16 months without filtration.

The winemaking philosophy at Spinifex Wines centres around handcrafted, small-batch production. The grapes are carefully sourced from select vineyards across the Barossa Valley and other regions in South Australia with an emphasis on sustainable viticulture practices to create wines with depth, character and authenticity.

A dry Riesling from the Eden Valley region of Australia offers a crisp, refreshing, and aromatic profile, which pairs well with a range of dishes. To complement the characteristics of the wine, try pairing it with seafood. The vibrant acidity and citrus notes of a dry Riesling make it an excellent match for seafood dishes. Consider serving it with fresh oysters, grilled or poached fish, scallops, or prawns. The wine's acidity can cut through the richness of seafood and enhance its flavours.

Alternatively, this wine can also work well with soft, creamy cheeses. Serve it alongside a cheese board featuring goat cheese, Camembert, or Brie. The wine's acidity helps cleanse the palate between bites and balances the richness of the cheese.
