The 2022 Garatiste Merricks Pinot Gris is a pure expression of this popular white varietal. From the first glance, its pale straw colour glistens in the glass, hinting at the freshness and vibrancy to come. On the nose, enticing aromas of ripe pear, green apple, and citrus zest immediately capture attention, accompanied by subtle floral notes and a touch of wet stone minerality.
With each sip this Pinot Gris reveals its true character. The palate is greeted by a burst of crisp, juicy flavours that mirror the aromatic profile. The lusciousness of the pear and apple flavours is well-balanced by zesty lemon and grapefruit, adding a bright, refreshing element. There is a remarkable purity to the fruit, showcasing the wine's excellent craftsmanship.
The texture is smooth and velvety, with a medium body that gives it a pleasing weight on the palate. The wine's acidity is vibrant, providing a lively backbone that carries the flavours effortlessly and maintains a refreshing finish.

Made in a pure-fruited, medium-bodied style that takes its inspiration from Burgundy rather than northern Italy or Alsace, this funky, nuanced Gris is drawn from a north/northeast-facing site in Merricks with 25-year-old vines. The fruit was hand-sorted in the vineyard and winery, then pressed and sent with full solids to old puncheons for a wild ferment (which included a 20% whole-bunch component) for three weeks. Maturation was on gross lees in old neutral barrels for seven months.
Barnaby Flanders is behind the Garagiste label, starting in 2006 with a focus on a range of small-batch Mornington Peninsula wines with the emphasis on single-site, sub-regional expressions of his region. Known for his artisanal approach, and with a focus on cool-climate varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Barnaby strives to showcase the unique terroir of the region. The winery takes its name from the French term "garagiste," which refers to a group of innovative winemakers who produce exceptional wines in small, humble spaces. Garagiste Wines Mornington Peninsula embodies this spirit by crafting high-quality, limited-production wines that capture the essence of the region's vineyards. We are always impressed with the serious quality of the Garagiste range wines, and we are sure you'll agree with us.
